Scott Praises Passage of The Equality Act

Statement

Date: Feb. 25, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Chairman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 5, the Equality Act, which prohibits discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals in employment, education, credit, jury service, federal funding, housing, and accommodations.

"Freedom from discrimination is a core American value. Unfortunately, far too many states do not have laws explicitly barring discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. As a result, LGBTQ+ individuals are still denied access to education, fired from jobs, and exposed to other forms of discrimination because of who they are or who they love.

"By passing the Equality Act, the House is again taking a step to ensure LGTBQ+ individuals are protected against unlawful discrimination. More than 55 years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, we must swiftly enact this legislation to make clear that all people in this country are equally protected under the law."
