Norton Reelected as Chair of Highways and Transit Subcommittee, Prioritizes Rising Issues

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) was elected by her fellow Democrats on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to return as the chair of the Highways and Transit Subcommittee, the largest and most important of the Committee's subcommittees. Norton has focused her congressional committee work on transportation and infrastructure, most recently as a primary architect of the Moving Forward Act. The subcommittee's jurisdiction over transit, including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) rail and bus systems, is of particular importance to the District of Columbia and the national capital region.

In addition, Norton will serve on three other subcommittees that she sought because of their strong impact on the District -- Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management; Aviation; and Water Resources and Environment. Norton's work on the Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management Subcommittee, which she chaired during two previous Congresses, has developed and transformed entire neighborhoods in the District, including NoMa and the Southeast and Southwest Waterfronts, generating millions of dollars in revenue for the federal and District governments. Norton's work on that subcommittee is particularly important because of the large number of federal properties and land in the District, as well as federal agencies housed in leased space in privately owned buildings, which, along with their employees, bring revenue to the District. Norton will use her role on the Aviation Subcommittee to continue her efforts to combat airplane and helicopter noise, which has dramatically increased in neighborhoods across the District.

"Transportation and infrastructure issues are among the most bipartisan in the House and Senate," Norton said. "I look forward to focusing particularly on rising issues, among them, reducing congestion, addressing climate change, and encouraging innovation, while continuing to prioritize investment in infrastructure for D.C., the national capital region and the country as chair of the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit in the 117th Congress."
