U.S. Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) released the following statement after voting to pass the Equality Act, which would give LGBTQ+ Americans federal protection against discrimination in employment, housing, and other core aspects of life:

"No person should face discrimination at their job, on the bus, or when applying for housing or federal services because of who they are," said Rep. Lee. "But for far too long, LGBTQ+ Americans have had to hide who they are out of fear of unjust retribution. I cast my vote for the Equality Act to uphold the basic promise that everyone should have full and equal civil rights protections under the law.

"But we must remember, the fight for true equality goes beyond Washington. It is every American's duty to stand up against the culture of discrimination and violence against the LGBTQ+ community. We need to take it upon ourselves to create a more inclusive, compassionate society where no person is mistreated because of who they are or who they love."

"With today's passage of the Equality Act, the people's House has sent a loud message that we will not tolerate anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination anywhere -- not at work or school, and not at a restaurant or when buying a home," said Silver State Equality State Director André C. Wade. "LGBTQ+ Nevadans are fortunate to have strong civil rights protections, but too many Americans live their lives in fear of discrimination, harassment and refusal of services just for being their authentic selves. We are grateful to Congresswoman Susie Lee -- along with Representatives Steven Horsford and Dina Titus -- for representing Nevada's values and making an historic vote."
