Location: Memphis, TN
Issues: Religion

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement on learning of the passing of Father Nicholas Vieron, the retired pastor of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, earlier today:

"Father Vieron was always friendly, always had something nice to say and had lots of jokes to share. My favorite: There are three stages in life -- young, middle aged, and "you're looking good.' Father Vieron was a force for good, standing up to Mayor Loeb with Rabbi James Wax, the Reverend Frank McRae, Dean William Dimmick and others, shoulder-to-shoulder with Memphis' Black ministers at the time of the assassination of Dr. King in 1968. An ecumenical leader, he always stood for fairness, justice, and tolerance. He was a marvelous man who I always enjoyed sharing time with. His was an exceptional life and he is truly irreplaceable. He will be missed."
