Friday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata welcomed $250,000 in federal funding for local mental health and substance abuse services.

This new grant award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is directed to American Samoa Department of Human and Social Services (DHSS) for the American Samoa State Opioid Response Project.

"Thank you to Fiso Talalupelele for this good work," said Aumua Amata. "Our community should respond with compassion and help to those struggling with substance abuse or facing a mental health crisis, and work to make sure they do not face overcoming such needs alone."

The DHSS, under Director Muavaefa'atasi John Suisala, is tasked with managing DHSS programs that provide important social services.

HHS is led by Secretary Alex Azar for the President's Administration, and this grant is from its Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, under Assistant Secretary Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz, and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, under Director Dr. Joseph Bullock.
