Pappas Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Striking Down Louisiana Abortion Restriction

Statement

Date: June 29, 2020

Today Congressman Chris Pappas issued the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled that a Louisiana law making it harder for patients to access abortion care is unconstitutional:

"In states across the country, anti-choice politicians have erected an array of political roadblocks to thwart access to abortion," said Congressman Chris Pappas. "Today's decision by the Supreme Court finds one of these state laws to be an undue burden that is unconstitutional. However, the struggle for reproductive freedom is far from over. I remain committed to supporting Roe v. Wade and ensuring all who need it have access to reproductive care."

Congressman Pappas is a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, and joined an amicus brief filed in support of the plaintiffs in June Medical Services LLC v. Gee. Last November, Pappas introduced the Put Patients First Act with Congresswoman Lee and Senator Murray to block the Trump Administration's attempt to allow health care providers to refuse lifesaving care on a religious or "conscience" basis. He is also a co-sponsor of the Women's Health Protection Act, the EACH Woman Act, and the Global HER Act.
