Congressman Brown: President Trump Continues Using the Military as Props for Political Gain

Statement

Date: June 25, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Anthony Brown (MD-04), Vice Chair of the House Armed Services Committee and 30-year Army veteran, released the following statement after the Department of Defense announced it would extend the deployment of 4,000 Department of Defense personnel to the southern border through October:

"The continued deployment of troops, guardsmen and Department of Defense personnel to the southern border remains the Trump Administration's attempt to distract from mounting failures at home and abroad. That does not make this long running stunt any less harmful to morale and readiness. That the Commander in Chief sees our service members as props for his own political gain, at the expense of our national security, should continue to outrage. We cannot allow this to become normal.

"As our nation faces a pandemic and economic crisis, global threats do not stop. We are continuing to take servicemembers away from their missions, training as well as relief work in our communities ravaged by sickness for often menial work and to soothe this President's ego and fulfill his campaign promises. Our border doesn't require a military response, but rather a humanitarian solution. It's irresponsible and once again reveals President Trump's complete and utter lack of leadership, moral authority or regard for anyone or anything beyond himself. The President is a national security threat, the sooner he leaves office the safer this country will be."
