Military education policies okayed

Press Release

Date: June 14, 2020

Including the Marianas and American Samoa in the Defense Department's STARBASE STEM education program and expanding education assistance for military spouses is gaining support. U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawai'i) offered my STARBASE and Military Spouse Career Education bills as amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act and the Senate Armed Services Committee gave its okay during mark-up on Thursday. The STARBASE grant program aims to improve math and science skills through partnerships between military installations and schools with high proportions of economically and educationally disadvantaged students. The Military Spouse Career Education bill would help wives and husbands of service members finish their college degrees more quickly and get training needed to relicense in their professions, when they must move to a new location under military orders. The bill now heads to the Senate floor for consideration. Thank you, Senator Hirono.
