Congressman Steven Horsford Statement on Pride Month

Statement

Date: June 1, 2020
Location: Las Vegas, NV

Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) released the following statement to mark the start of Pride Month, an annual celebration each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan.

"51 years ago, LGBTQ+ Americans took to the streets outside the Stonewall Inn to fight against brutality and violence, and demand an end to harassment and hate. Now, every June to honor their efforts, LGBTQ+ individuals across the country unapologetically celebrate the beauty and vibrancy of their community and the incalculable contributions they have made to our nation," Congressman Horsford said. "I'm proud of the progress Nevada has made on LGBTQ+ equality, but the existing national patchwork of protections is not sufficient to ensure that LGBTQ individuals can live free from discrimination. Last year, I was proud to vote for the Equality Act, which will ensure that all LGBTQ+ Americans can enjoy their most basic human rights no matter where they live, work, or go to school. I'll continue working with leaders in Nevada and across the nation to protect the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ individuals."

Last year, Congressman Horsford voted to pass the Equality Act, which extends the full anti-discrimination protections under the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other key pillars of fairness and justice in our country to LGTBQ+ Americans.

"Sexual orientation and gender identity deserve full civil rights protections -- not just in the workplace, but in every place: in education, housing, credit, jury service and public accommodation," Congressman Horsford said at the time. "No one should ever be forced to lose their jobs, their home or live in fear because of who they are or whom they love."

As Majority Leader of the Nevada State Senate, Congressman Horsford helped pass Nevada's Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) in 2011, barring employers from discriminating based on gender identity or expression.
