Rep. Omar Statement on Pride Month

Statement

Date: June 3, 2020
Location: Minneapolis, MN

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released the following statement today in recognition of Pride Month.

"As our community has been painfully reminded, deep inequities and injustices persist within our Minnesota community and the country. The loss of one of our community members, George Floyd, has ignited a national conversation on police violence and the continued brutality committed against Black people on a regular basis.

"But we are also reminded that our destinies our tied. Just as we seek to end police violence, we must end violence against the trans community. Just as we fight systemic racism, we must fight to outlaw conversion therapy, a form of torture that is still legal in Minnesota and many other states.

"As we confront racism and police brutality, we must remember the origin of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement at Stonewall where marginalized individuals, including people of color, came together to oppose injustice.

"The fight for full equality is far from over. We must work to end discrimination and hate in all forms, so all Americans can live with dignity."
