Congressman Johnson Aces Humane Society Scorecard

DECATUR, GA -- Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, announced today that he received a 100 percent from the Humane Society Legislative Fund for his voting record, co-sponsorship of legislation and leadership in helping prevent cruelty to animals.

Rep. Johnson and Rep. Sanford Bishop (Ga-02) were the only members of the Georgia delegation to receive a 100% score from the Humane Society. In 2012, he received the Humane Society's Animal Welfare Leadership Award for his work protecting and advocating for animal rights.

By contrast, Rep. Jody Hice (GA-10) received a 0, Reps. Auston Scott (GA-08), Doug Collins (GA-9) and Rock Allen (GA-12) received a 9 percent.

"It comes down to simple human decency and kindness," said Johnson. "These votes weren't hard -- we're taught at a young age the basics of right and wrong. The very foundation of our collective ethos tells us cruelty to animals is not to be tolerated."

The House scorecard was based on votes and leadership on several key areas, including animal cruelty, protection of big cats, horse racing and horse slaughter, puppy mills, animal trophy imports, protection of whales and marine life and funding for the protection of wildlife.
