President Trump Signs Delegation's Bill Naming Missoula Post Office After Jeannette Rankin

Statement

On December 13, 2019, President Trump signed into law the Montana delegation's bill, H.R. 1972, designating a Missoula post office in honor Jeannette Rankin.

Rankin grew up on a family ranch just outside of Missoula and was the first woman elected to Congress.

Congressman Greg Gianforte and U.S. Senators Steve Daines and Jon Tester celebrated President Trump signing their bipartisan bill.

"Jeannette Rankin was a trailblazer for women's rights in America. It's my honor to recognize her and her lasting contributions to our country," Gianforte said. "Naming a Missoula post office after Jeannette Rankin will serve as a reminder of her legacy and leadership."

"Jeannette Rankin is a true source of inspiration to young women in Montana and across the country," Daines said. "I thank President Trump for signing our bipartisan bill into law so her legacy can be remembered for generations to come."

"Jeanette Rankin left a larger-than-life legacy, one that all Montanans should be proud of," Tester said. "Today we're enshrining into law a permanent reminder of her steadfast commitment to peace, her trailblazing path, and her dedication to what she believed in."

The new law names the post office at 1100 West Kent Avenue in Missoula after Rankin.

During this year's Women's History Month, Gianforte and Daines in March introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives, H.R. 1972, and the U.S. Senate, S. 953, to name a Missoula post office in honor of Jeannette Rankin.

On October 16, 2019, the U.S. House unanimously passed Gianforte's bill to rename a Missoula post office in honor of Jeannette Rankin.

On October 22, 2019, Tester joined as a cosponsor of Daines' bill.

On November 21, 2019, the Senate unanimously passed H.R. 1972.
