"This afternoon, the @HispanicCaucus and I were briefed by the Trump administration on recovery efforts in Puerto Rico following recent devastating earthquakes and the damage left by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Here's what I learned ⬇️

The Trump administration's response has been - at best - incompetent. After the devastating recent earthquakes, the president has so far failed to sign a major disaster declaration that would further ease the suffering.

Their inaction to both natural disasters has directly caused both death and suffering among our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico.

What remains clear is that President Trump and his administration continue to hinder Puerto Rico's recovery by illegally withholding disaster relief funding following the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Their reasoning? There isn't any.

The Trump administration is treating Puerto Ricans like second-class citizens -- and with a disregard that has obviously racial and bigoted undertones.

It's been more than two years since the hurricane struck the island and caused billions of dollars in damage, left thousands without homes, and plunged Puerto Rico into chaos. Our friends and neighbors in Puerto Rico are counting on us to have their back.

That's why I'm renewing my call for the Trump administration to end their stonewalling and release these funds to allow Puerto Rico to rebuild. The administration's negligence is absolutely appalling.

Our fellow Americans deserve help -- and they deserve answers."
