Statement

Date: Oct. 28, 2019
Location: Washington D.C.
Issues: Senior Citizens

The average life expectancy in America today is higher than in any other period in history and our nation's senior population is expected to double by 2060. The House today passed the Dignity in Aging Act (H.R. 4334), bipartisan legislation that provides critical social and nutrition services to millions of older Americans.

"H.R. 4334, the Dignity in Aging Act, reflects Congress' commitment to our nation's seniors and builds upon the law's flexible policies, allowing older Americans to age with health, dignity, and independence in the communities of their choosing," Republican Leader Virginia Foxx (R-NC) said on the House floor prior to the vote.

"As the Representative of a district that has one of the largest constituencies of older Americans, I am proud to rise as a co-author of H.R. 4334, the Dignity in Aging Act -- bipartisan legislation that reauthorizes the Older Americans Act -- which will directly benefit the seniors in my district and those across the country," Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) said on the House floor prior to vote.

BACKGROUND: On September 18, the Committee on Education and Labor passed the Dignity in Aging Act (H.R. 4334), bipartisan legislation that reauthorizes the Older Americans Act (OAA). In addition to well-known programs like Meals on Wheels, OAA supports a wide range of social and nutrition services for the more than 41 million Americans age 65 years or older. These services help older Americans lead healthy and independent lives by offering meals, job instruction, health promotion, caregiver support, transportation, and more.
