Governor Cuomo Announces Up to $13 Million for Interstate 684 Resurfacing Project

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced work has begun on a project to resurface the two-mile section of Interstate 684 from Harris Road to Exit 6, in the town of Bedford, Westchester County. The State will provide up to $13 million to renew this critical north-south travel corridor in the Mid-Hudson Region, enhancing safety and providing a smoother ride for commuters and residents. The funding to make the project happen was secured through a collaboration between the Governor and the State Legislature.

"All across New York State, we are making critical investments in our infrastructure that is helping to elevate our local communicates and create jobs in all facets of the economy," Governor Cuomo said. "Westchester County residents and visitors will soon experience a smoother ride on an important section of I-684 thanks to this funding, and I thank our state elected officials for recognizing the need to resurface this critical stretch of highway."

Fiber reinforced asphalt overlay, a stronger, longer-lasting material, will be used to replace the existing concrete pavement surface on I-684 and the access and exit ramps to exits 5 and 6. The project will enhance safety by replacing guiderails, repairing traffic signal loops, cleaning and altering drainage structures and repairing basins.

Consistent with Governor Cuomo's Drivers First initiative, the project has been designed to minimize impacts to the travelling public. Work requiring lane and shoulder closures is anticipated to occur during overnight hours. Balloon lighting for nighttime operations will be utilized to reduce glare and distractions to motorists. This specialized luminaire is attached to equipment to diffuse, soften and disperse light.

Work is expected to be completed by end of 2019.

State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said, "This project is another demonstration of how New York State, under Governor Cuomo's leadership, is using the latest technologies and materials to transform our transportation network. It will create a more durable road surface for motorists as they travel through one of the most important travel corridors in Westchester County."

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said, "Investing in our local infrastructure is a top priority for the Senate Democratic Majority because it is essential for growing the economy and improving New Yorkers' quality of life. I was proud to secure this State and Municipal Facilities (SAM) grant, thanks to the outstanding advocacy of my colleagues, Senator Shelley Mayer and Senator Pete Harckham. These funds will help repave two miles of I-684 for the benefit of local residents, commuters, and businesses who utilize this vital corridor."

Senator Shelley Mayer said, "I am so pleased that Governor Cuomo and Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins have partnered to provide the funding to repave this two mile stretch of road which desperately needed work. Since I was elected to the State Senate, the need to repave this stretch of I-684 has been one of my top priorities. Working together with the Department of Transportation, the Town of Bedford, Senator Pete Harckham, and Assemblyman David Buchwald, we were able to finally amass funding necessary for this long-overdue work. My profound thanks to Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins for her commitment to this project, to Bedford Town Supervisor Chris Burdick for his relentless pressure, and to the NYS Department of Transportation for its strong partnership."

Senator Peter Harckham said, "Thanks to our hard work and the new Democratic Majority in Albany, the dangerously deteriorated I-684 Westchester corridor is finally undergoing long-needed, major repairs. This improved major artery will mean improved quality of life and safety for Westchester and Putnam County drivers. Kudos go to Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Senator Shelley Mayer, along with Assemblyman David Buchwald, with whom I worked to ensure that these desperately needed road repairs were made."

Assemblyman David Buchwald said, "This occasion is the culmination of the efforts of so many elected officials and community residents who were determined advocates for funding this critically needed work. I want to especially thank my State Senate colleagues who were instrumental in getting this final stretch of I-684 repaved. This project will mean a smoother, quieter and, most importantly, safer ride for tens of thousands of motorists every day."

Town of Bedford Supervisor Chris Burdick said, "I am delighted that after many years of advocacy, this project has finally come together. It will be an enormous improvement in safety for the huge number of motorists who traverse the road every day; critical to our residents and critical to commerce."

Westchester County Legislator Kitley Covill said, "To the residents of Bedford, the surrounding towns and especially the volunteer emergency organizations who respond to accidents nearly daily, the repaving of 684 was a top priority. I was happy to lend the County voice to the chorus that has fought for this project on behalf of the local residents for years. Thank you especially to Shelley Mayer, David Buchwald and Peter Harckham who expended countless hours making this happen."

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual's driver's license.
