Republican Leaders Double Down on Veto Override, No Counteroffer Shared After 35 Days

Thirty-five days ago, Governor Roy Cooper sent a balanced budget compromise offer to Republican legislative leadership. Since then, Republican leaders have played games, pointed fingers, and attempted to auction off an entire state agency to get the votes they want to override the Governor's veto.

Last week, 51 House Democrats sent a letter to Speaker Tim Moore and Senate Leader Phil Berger to make it clear that they would not vote to override the Governor's veto, leaving Republicans short of the votes they would need. And what did Republican leadership do? They've doubled down on their obstruction, with the Speaker's spokesman saying today "the speaker will hold the veto override when the votes are secured."

Where is the Republican counteroffer and when will Republican legislative leaders drop their veto override attempts and actually negotiate?

Governor Cooper's compromise offer would close the health care coverage gap, raise teacher pay, cut taxes for people and guarantee school construction while balancing the budget and saving money in the Rainy Day Fund.
