Jenniffer González Spends Thanksgiving with Troops in The Middle East and Africa

Press Release

Congresswoman Jenniffer González Colón, spent Thanksgiving with Puerto Rican soldiers that are stationed at one of the bases in Djibouti, located in the so-called Horn of Africa.

"Today is a special day for each family. The opportunity to share with your loved ones and give thanks for everything we have, what we are and celebrate life. Thousands of soldiers today spend this Thanksgiving Day serving us on the war front and around the world defending freedom and our way of life. They do it with determination and the sacrifice of not being able to see their loved ones in this special time, "said the congresswoman.

The meeting was part of a bipartisan mission organized by Congress to share with the troops in bases in the Middle East and Africa that make up the Central Command of the United States (USCENTCOM) where they held meetings with security agencies and national defense leaders, for the preparation of the armed forces and security matters.

González Colón added that "today, in recognition of our men and women in the Armed Forces and grateful for their service, I share with a congressional delegation the Thanksgiving Day with our soldiers in action in the Middle East and Africa. A privilege to meet with ours in each base. To them on this day I bring you coffee from the mountain! "

The mission of USCENTCOM, whose command remains in Tampa, Florida, is to "direct and permit military operations and activities with allies and partners to enhance regional security and stability in support of the enduring interests of the United States."

This Command has as areas of responsibility to 20 countries with a population of more than 550 million people from 22 ethnic groups. Often, this area is characterized by civil wars, insurgencies, terrorism, failed states and humanitarian suffering.

The 20 nations span more than 4 million square miles, stretching from northeastern Africa through the Middle East to Central and South Asia, have forms of government that span the entire political spectrum, including emerging democracies, monarchies hereditary, autocracies and theocratic Islamist regimes.

Some of the major focuses of USCENTCOM are fighting ISIS terrorist forces and seeking a safe distribution of humanitarian aid to the area.
