Issue Position: Ethics

The Center for Public Integrity ranked South Carolina 5th worst in the nation for our ethics laws with a failing score.

This is unacceptable and we must pass laws that hold government officials accountable. The establishment politicians refuse to address this issue and the faux ethics reform bill that they attempted to pass would've actually done more harm than good. There are simple solutions to this problem and the changes must be made.

Politicians should be required to disclose their sources of income and personal assets to ensure that there are no conflicts of interest. The legislative session should be shortened so that time spent in Columbia is used to address important government functions. Judges should be appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the legislature, rather than selected by the legislature. It is inappropriate for those that judge the laws to be chosen by those that make laws.

Finally, the budgeting process should be made completely public. A government that is run by a few select individuals in secret and behind closed doors is not representative of the people nor accountable to the people.
