The Kansas system is an outlier and one of the worst in the nation. Supreme Court Justices are selected by committee of 9 persons, 5 of whom are lawyers who are chosen by the Kansas Bar Association. The Governor is then given a list of three nominees and asked to pick one. No Senate confirmation is required. This is an ultimate "good old boy" system and has led to an insular and imperial court. Reform is clearly needed. The federal system of executive selection, then hearings, then a confirmation vote by the Senate is infinitely preferable.
