Representative Anderson's Statement Regarding the Trump/Putin Summit in Helsinki

Statement

Date: July 17, 2018

Yesterday the world watched in shock and dismay as President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a joint press conference. The two leaders first sat down for a bilateral meeting and then delivered their public remarks live to the press. Standing next to Putin, Trump declined to side with US intelligence on Russian election interference, saying he doesn't "see any reason why" they would be responsible. He may not see it, but a majority of Congress and government officials on both sides of the aisle agree that there is sufficient evidence to conclude that Russia was involved in efforts to meddle in our election, including President Trump's own appointed officials, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Lt. General H.R. McMasters.

The statements made by our President make us look foolish and weak. Our electoral system has been exposed as damaged. Instead of speaking out against those who undermine our democracy, he tries to deny it even happened. It begs the question, is President Trump working to undermine our system of democracy? Does your current Representative value our democracy and the alliances we have worked decades to build, or does he turn a blind eye as our country loses standing and credibility around the world? I value our democracy. I know we all do. Some are still standing behind the President and not speaking out on this attack. My opponent touts support for the President in his campaign without regard for the people of this district. Does he value President Trump's opinion over that of the rest of America? Does it mean he's with Trump and not with all of us here in Mississippi? Is he FOR the protection of our democratic process or he AGAINST it?

I am for the protection of our democracy. I am for protecting the value of each and every voter, regardless of how they vote. I am for and stand with the people of South Mississippi.
