Fighting the Opioid Crisis: We Must Protect Our Families Communities

This week the House will take several steps forward in the fight against the opioid crisis. This epidemic has been a top priority for the 115th Congress and this administration. This crisis knows no boundaries and is sweeping the country at an alarming rate. On average, 115 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.

"This type of addiction recognizes no race, gender, income, or marital status. We are working hard to provide funding that focuses on comprehensive treatment, prevention, recovery, and rehabilitation programs. We must protect our families and communities. I'm proud that this is getting the attention it deserves," Rep. Marshall said.

There were 146 opioid-related deaths in Kansas in 2016. While that is much lower than the national average it is still too many.

This week, the House will take up dozens of bills to fight the opioid crisis in America, building on the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Actand the 21st Century Cures Act, as well as the $4 billion appropriated in the government funding bill earlier this year.

"While we're working hard to provide solutions, this problem wont be solved within the halls of the federal government. We must also call on our physicians, pharmaceutical companies, first responders, and families to work together to find answers in their communities," Rep. Marshall said.

The opioid-related bills under consideration this week:

Encourages non-addictive opioid alternatives to treat pain
Improves data to identify and help at-risk patients and families
Addresses high prescribing rates while enhancing prescription drug monitoring programs
Gives law enforcement tools to get dangerous drugs out of our communities
Better intercepts illicit opioids at international mail facilities
Improves access to federal resources for local communities
Improves and expand access to treatment and recovery services
Provides incentives for enhanced care, coordination, and innovation
Establishes comprehensive opioid recovery centers
