Womack Statement on SCOTUS Janus v. AFSCME Ruling

Statement

Date: June 27, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) today released the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled that public-sector unions can no longer charge non-members mandatory fees for collective bargaining in Janus v. AFSCME. This decision effectively overturned the 1977 Supreme Court decision on Abood v. Detroit Board of Education.

"Paying union fees should have never been a condition of employment in the public sector, and I applaud the Supreme Court for standing up for the rights of law enforcement officers, public school teachers, state and municipal government employees, and all those who have been called to a career in public service. By restoring government workers' constitutional rights, today's decision affirms our commitment to the freedom of speech and the freedom of association granted to all Americans under the first amendment."
