Dr. Rand Paul Votes to Protect Life

Tonight, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) issued the following statement after voting to support cloture on S. 2311, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, legislation that would protect the lives of unborn children by prohibiting elective abortions 20 weeks or later into a pregnancy:

"As a physician, I was often called to the hospital to treat premature babies and help save their eyesight. Today, as a senator, I continued to protect life at this fragile stage by voting for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. I will always stand up for life," said Dr. Paul.
In October 2017, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the legislation by a vote of 237-189, and Dr. Paul is an original cosponsor of the Senate companion. Last year, Kentucky joined a growing list of states in passing similar legislation.

In January 2017, Dr. Paul reintroduced his Life at Conception Act to declare "that the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution is vested in each human being."

The Life at Conception Act does not amend or interpret the Constitution but simply relies on the 14th Amendment, which specifically authorizes Congress to enforce its provisions.
