Carper Reacts to Trump Statement on Transgender Troops

Statement

Date: July 26, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper, a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, released the following statement on President Trump's tweet that the U.S. government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in the U.S. military.

"The brave Americans who take an oath to defend our country and Constitution deserve our utmost respect and support, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Department of Defense ended its ban on transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military just over a year ago, and military officials are currently reviewing how accepting new transgender recruits into the military would impact the force. President Trump's apparent order is uncalled for and needlessly cruel to the thousands of transgender individuals who honorably serve our nation in uniform today, and those willing to stand up to defend our country tomorrow."
