Garden State Equality Endorses Phil Murphy

Press Release

Date: July 6, 2017
Location: Newark, NJ

Today on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, a city with the state's largest population of LGBT couples, Garden State Equality endorsed Ambassador Phil Murphy for Governor of New Jersey.

"The choice for our community could not be clearer," said Christian Fuscarino, Executive Director of Garden State Equality. "In a time when the ACA is at risk of being repealed; in a time when the White House refuses to acknowledge our community and continues to put viciously anti-LGBT people in leadership positions; in a time when Trans folks are denied basic dignity and respect from our state government, it is time for a Governor who has our back and his name is Phil Murphy."

Over 100 people gathered on the boardwalk, outside of Convention Hall, in support of the organization and Ambassador Murphy.

"We know New Jersey is stronger when we work together as one community, committed to ensuring every member of society can not only be successful, but live secure in who they are," said Murphy. "The fight for equality didn't end two years ago when the right for every citizen to marry who they loved was confirmed. We cannot stop until every New Jerseyan has full and unfettered equality and can live free of hatred and intolerance. No one should ever be marginalized based on orientation or identity. I look forward to working with Garden State Equality to creating that better future."

About Garden State Equality
Garden State Equality (GSE) is New Jersey's largest statewide advocacy and education organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. GSE, in collaboration with community partners, led efforts to ensure nondiscrimination for transgender and gender nonconforming people in NJ, pass the most comprehensive anti-bullying law in the country, end sexual orientation and gender identity/expression change efforts in NJ (sometimes called conversion therapy), and bring marriage equality to the Garden State.

In this post-marriage environment, the main focuses are youth, transgender people, and seniors, and our work on those issues is informed by racial, economic, and disability justice concerns. GSE is working on campaigns to address safe environments for youth, improvement of health services that meet LGBT community needs, and respectful treatment of seniors. Beyond that, GSE supports NJ's activist community by bringing an LGBT lens to the shared struggle for justice.
