Rep. Rokita Sees Partner in Devos

Press Release

Date: Feb. 7, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Todd Rokita released the following statement after the confirmation of Betsy DeVos for the Secretary of Education position.

"As Chairman of the Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education subcommittee, I am excited to finally have an ally at the Department of Education who truly believes that when parents have a choice, kids have a chance. Mrs. DeVos will serve as a valuable partner as we move forward on school choice legislation and implementing the Every Student Succeeds Act, making sure that our reforms benefit parents and their children, not federal bureaucrats."

Continuing his work to champion school choice, Rep. Rokita re-introduced the Educational Opportunities Act yesterday. This bill would allow individuals and businesses to contribute to qualified Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) that award need-based scholarships to students to defray the cost of attending private schools. The bill creates an individual federal tax credit of up to $4,500 and a corporate credit of up to $100,000 for donations to qualifying, non-profit SGOs.

In January, Rep. Rokita also re-introduced the Creating Hope and Opportunities for Individuals and Communities through Education (CHOICE) Act. This bill would expand educational opportunities for students from military families, low-income families, and the disabled receiving educational services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
