Issue Position: Economy and Jobs

Issue Position

Government doesn't create jobs. Americans do. We need to get the government out of the way so businesses can thrive and grow. As the owner of a small business in the 5th district, Tommy Pope knows what it means to sign both sides of a paycheck and he'll take that knowledge with him to Washington.

Like the rest of us Tommy Pope felt the mounting frustration as President Obama vastly expanded the regulatory state the last eight years. Now President Trump will need all the help he can get to roll back job-killing regulations that have shipped jobs and economic activity overseas. Tommy supports a complete review of all regulations that make it hard for companies like America's energy producers to survive.

Just as our economy loses billions to complying with a complicated regulatory regime, we also lose as much time complying with one of the most complicated tax codes in the developed world. Loopholes, deductions, and special interest carve outs have made our tax system too complicated, too expensive, and too burdensome. Tommy Pope believes we must pass pro-growth tax reform that lowers individual and corporate tax rates while eliminating unnecessary and often costly loopholes.

Few things are more important to Tommy than repealing and replacing ObamaCare. He strongly supports the efforts of President Trump and Republicans in Congress to repeal the disastrous law and replace it with free-market solutions such as allowing portability of plans and for individuals to purchase health insurance across state lines.

Finally, Tommy understands that $20 trillion in debt is one of the greatest threats to our nation's security. In Congress, he'll work with the Trump administration to fix America's finances and stop spending money we don't have. Tommy supports a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution so the federal government is forced to balance its checkbook, just like all South Carolinians.
