New Cornyn Bill Would Promote Quality Care, Reduce Costs for Cancer Patients

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) released the following statement after introducing the Cancer Care Payment Reform Act, a bill to establish a national Oncology Medical Home (OMH) demonstration project to reform the way Medicare pays for cancer treatment:

"Those suffering from cancer need the best available resources, and this bill can help deliver well-coordinated, higher quality care to patients for lower costs. The OMH system has proven successful among community oncology practices in Texas, and with this bill I hope to spread that success to cancer patients across the nation."

The Cancer Care Payment Reform Act works toward better health outcomes, increased transparency, higher quality therapies, and a more modern way of paying for cancer treatment. This five-year demonstration project builds off of several successful payment models that have already documented an ability to provide better patient care and achieve cost savings to the health care system. It would incentivize oncology practices to improve quality measures, which would result in a reduction of overall costs to the health care system by providing higher quality care and keeping patients out of the hospital where care is most costly. Participating oncology centers would then be rewarded a portion of the savings.
