Young Tours Farms, Cooperatives With Secretary Northey on Annual Ag Tour

Date: Oct. 28, 2016
Location: Des Moines, IA

This week, Iowa Congressman David Young toured farms and cooperatives across the Third District with Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey as part of his second annual "Bringing in the Harvest" agriculture tour.

"Fall is an extraordinary season here in Iowa, and this annual tour allows me the opportunity to meet with our busy and hardworking farmers during harvest time and thank them for all of the remarkable work they do to feed and fuel the world," Congressman Young said. "This year, Secretary Northey and I met with many farmers and members of our agriculture community in the Third District to discuss the issues concerning them, their ideas, and learn more about the specific challenges they face. Iowa is a leader in agriculture, and I'm honored to bring folks' thoughts and concerns to Washington, to ensure Iowa agriculture is a priority in Congress."

The Congressman, a member of the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, has consistently fought for Iowa farmers and all of Iowa agriculture in Congress by fighting to protect crop insurance and a long term Renewable Fuel Standard; supporting agriculture and conservation research; pushing back against harmful rules and regulations such as the ill-conceived Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule; and developing and supporting commonsense policy to protect Iowa's agriculture interests.

Notably, of the number of important pieces of legislation Congressman Young introduced this year in support of Iowa agriculture, his agro-terrorism preparedness bill - the Securing our Agriculture and Food Act (H.R. 5346) - passed the U.S. House of Representatives last month. Congressman Young has also introduced legislation to enhance the ability of beginning farmers to own their own machinery and farm efficiently, and he is working to develop policy to create a precision conservation pilot project.

At the Holliday Family Farm in Greenfield, Congressman Young took to the cornfield and operated the combine while discussing the farm's best practices and the status of this year's harvest.

Throughout the tour, Congressman Young spoke with Iowans about the impact harmful rules and regulations have on agriculture and businesses in the Third District and the importance of trade for Iowa farmers. Pictured above is Congressman Young's visit to the United Farmers Cooperative in Creston.

At the Clarinda Cooperative, Congressman Young and Secretary Northey had the opportunity to visit with several Iowa FFA students and discuss the future of agriculture in Iowa.

In Panora, Congressman Young visited Heartland Cooperative. The Congressman also helped pull and read samples of corn to test moisture content and determine in which bin the corn would go.
