Issue Position: Protecting the Rights of All Pennsylvanians

Issue Position

Protect Women's Rights

With women's access to health care under threat across our country, it's critical that we have an Attorney General who will protect women's rights. Throughout his career, Josh Shapiro has been a staunch defender of a woman's right to choose and he is the the only pro-choice candidate in the race. That's why Planned Parenthood endorsed Shapiro and its executive director said, "Josh is the only candidate for Attorney General we trust to defend women's access to health care."

As Chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, he's partnered with law enforcement to reduce domestic violence and abuse cases while increasing support for victims. As Attorney General, he will protect women's rights by ensuring full access to fundamental health services, caring for victims of domestic violence, prosecuting workplace discrimination and developing a comprehensive response to campus sexual assault.

Stand up for LGBT Equality

Josh Shapiro has fought for equality for the LGBT community throughout his career and will do so as Attorney General of Pennsylvania. As Chairman of the Montgomery County Commission, Shapiro, helped the first gay couples marry in Pennsylvania, paving the way for marriage equality. In the state House, Shapiro fought to expand hate crimes legislation and non-discrimination protections for the LGBT community in housing and employment. As Attorney General, Shapiro will fairly enforce the law, use the bully pulpit to advance LGBT rights and protect the rights of all Pennsylvanians, no matter where they are from, what they look like, or who they love.

Fight to Protect Voting Rights.

The right to vote is the backbone of our democracy. Unfortunately, there are efforts in Pennsylvania and across the country to curtail that right. As Montgomery County Commissioner, Shapiro led the fight against disenfranchised elderly and low-income residents. As Attorney General, he will staunchly defend every Pennsylvanian's right to vote.

Make the Office of Attorney General More Reflective of the People It Serves.

Josh Shapiro believes it's critical that our government is fully reflective of the people it serves. In Montgomery County, Shapiro diversified the county's senior management, appointing the first woman chief operating officer of the county, the first Latina woman to lead the commerce department, the first African-American woman to serve as chief public defender and helping elect the first openly gay judge in county history. As Attorney General, he will establish the position of Chief Diversity Officer to ensure that the staff of the Office of Attorney General is fully representative of all Pennsylvanians.
