National Federation of Independent Business Endorses Kathy Szeliga

Press Release

Date: Sept. 8, 2016
Location: Baltimore, MD

Today, Maryland Senate Candidate Kathy Szeliga was endorsed by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). NFIB is the country's top small business association, representing small businesses across the country and right here in Maryland. They promote and protect the interests and rights of small businesses. Mike O'Halloran, NFIB State Director for Maryland and Delaware, and other representatives joined Szeliga at the public endorsement.

"Delegate Kathy Szeliga has been a great friend to small business in Maryland and deserves to represent the state in the U.S. Senate," said NFIB President and CEO Juanita Duggan. "As the owner of a small business, she knows the challenges posed by the federal government. During her time in the Maryland General Assembly, Szeliga had a perfect voting record with NFIB. We know that she will work for lower taxes and less burdensome rules and regulations."

"Having seen her dedication and tireless efforts on behalf of Maryland small business in the state legislature, we are thrilled to offer our endorsement," said NFIB/Maryland State Director Mike O'Halloran. "She will provide a much-needed voice of reason in the U.S. Senate."

Kathy Szeliga is a Maryland small business owner with a proven track record of fighting to help Maryland businesses by reducing burdensome regulations, cutting taxes and fees, and creating a pro-growth business environment in the state of Maryland.

"Maryland businesses like Betson Baltimore need a strong advocate for them in Washington," stated Szeliga. "As a small business owner myself, I know what businesses need to succeed. And I know what it means to sign the front of a paycheck and balance the budget. If we truly want to change Washington, we need to elect more business leaders with common sense who will work to help companies grow and thrive."

The NFIB endorsement took place at Betson Baltimore, a local NFIB member and distribution center for Betson Enterprises. Betson Enterprises is the largest distributor of amusement and vending equipment, coin operated parts and service in the United States a 4th generation company with more than 80 years of experience in the coin-operated industry. Betson Enterprises is a division of H. Betti Industries, Inc., with 14 distributions offices located across the country. Betson Baltimore is located in Baltimore City, employs 5 people, and serves the Mid-Atlantic region.

"It's not easy to run a successful small business," stated Nick Sarioglou, Betson Baltimore Branch Owner. "On top off the many challenges of gaining customers and making sales, business owners must keep up with an ever-expanding array of regulations. With all of the new regulations and rules coming out of Washington on what feels like a daily basis, Maryland businesses are struggling. The harder it is for us to stay in business, the more money we have to spend on compiling with all of the federal regulations. That means less money to expand our business and hire new employees. If there were more people in Congress who had actual business experience like Kathy Szeliga, I know we would see fewer regulations, fewer taxes, and more opportunities for small business owners and their workers."
