Location: Washington, DC

Iowa Congressman David Young today reminded folks of resources and information available to stay protected from fraud, scams, and identity theft during a telephone town hall he hosted for seniors in Iowa's Third Congressional District. Al Perales, an investigator from the Consumer Protection Division of the Iowa Attorney General's office, joined the call as a special guest to provide additional information and insight into these issues.

"I hear too often from folks about their experiences with scams and fraud, or stories about someone they know, which is why continued conversations about these threats are so important for Iowans in the Third Congressional District," Congressman Young said. "These crimes are far reaching and personal, and they stand to affect everyone, especially our seniors. I'm pleased Al could join me and lend his expertise while discussing these crimes, because the best way to stay protected is to stay informed and alert."

Congressman Young and Mr. Perales highlighted several best practices for Iowans to keep in mind in order to stay protected from scammers, thieves and fraudsters, including:

If an opportunity or deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Do not answer any calls from phone numbers you don't recognize.
Individuals from government agencies will never call you to ask for your bank account number.
Arming yourself with knowledge and information is the best way to stay protected from scammers, thieves and fraudsters.

During the telephone town hall, Congressman Young also referenced his work as the founder of the Bipartisan Congressional Task Force to Combat Identity Theft and Fraud, which he started earlier this year. The Congressman referred Iowans to the task force's official website, IDTaskForce-Young.House.Gov, for prevention resources, information about current scams and fraudulent practices, and updates about the task force's efforts.
