It's Time to Bring Real Change to Washington

Statement

Date: March 16, 2016
Issues: Elections

More than 36 years ago at the ripe old age of 18 years old, my husband, Mark, and I eloped. We had five dollars in our pocket, no car and minimum wage jobs. We believed the Beatles -- all you need is love.

Back then, Mark was a laborer in the construction industry. He came home dirty and tired every day, but he also came home proud of the skills that he was learning and of the fact that he was providing for his family. I had a variety of jobs during that time. I hung drywall one summer, but realized rather quickly I wasn't good at that. I worked on the construction of a golf course, was a dishwasher, a parking lot attendant, a maid, a waitress -- whatever I could find to pay the bills. Often I worked two jobs just so Mark and I could make ends meet. In fact, for our very first car, we traded $80 and a drill. And I can tell you it was worth $80 and a drill.

And by the grace of God, 36 years later we are still married and are now proud Maryland small business owners -- thirty years ago we started our very own construction company. The path to where we are today wasn't always easy, but we knew that where hard work meets opportunity in America, you can truly achieve the American Dream.

As a small business owner, I quickly learned just how much trouble government overregulation could cause. I was frustrated with what was happening in Annapolis and realized they needed someone to bring some business sense to the legislature. So I rolled up my sleeves and started fixing Maryland from within, serving as a state delegate for Harford and Baltimore Counties.

Apparently I wasn't the only one who was frustrated with Annapolis because in 2014, the people of Maryland defied all the odds and elected businessman Larry Hogan as their governor. Since his election, I have been working side by side with Governor Hogan in Annapolis to bring change to Maryland. And it seems like the people of Maryland couldn't be happier with his pro-business, common sense agenda: Governor Hogan's approval rating is incredible -- over 70 percent!

Now that Governor Hogan is working to change Maryland, we need to send some of that same change to Washington DC.

If there is one thing that people on both sides of the aisle can agree on it's that Washington DC is just not working right now. Career politicians and DC insiders, many of whom started out with the best of intentions, have lost sight of what they should be doing. So if we want to see real change in Washington, we can't send another career politician or DC insider to fix the problem. They are the ones who made the mess to begin with. They are a part of the problem. I am a part of the solution.

I am a true Marylander, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a Maryland small business owner. I am also am the only candidate in this race who has a proven track record of working with Governor Hogan to bring change to Maryland. I'm asking you to help me bring real change to Washington as your next United State Senator.
