Deborah Ross Statement on LGBT Pride Month

Statement

Deborah Ross, Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate today released the following statement in recognition of LGBT Pride Month.

"Pride month is a time to remember the strength and bravery of the LGBT community and the incredible progress our nation has made -- from the Stonewall Riots of 1969 to Marriage Equality in 2015 -- in ensuring equality for all in this country," said Deborah. "Despite this progress, much work remains to be done. Right now, in North Carolina, House Bill 2 prevents local government from banning discrimination against LGBT individuals across the state. That is wrong, and it goes against the very values North Carolina holds dear -- the values of equality, fairness, and treating others as we would want to be treated. I am confident that if we work together, then North Carolina's values will win out and HB2 will soon be history."

Deborah has been a longtime champion of individual civil rights. She has repeatedly called for the discriminatory HB2 law to be repealed.

Her opponent, incumbent Senator Richard Burr, on the other hand, said the law does not discriminate. He also voted in favor of a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, legislation that made it unlawful for companies to hire, fire, promote, or compensate people differently based on sexual orientation or sexual identity.
