Issue Position: Criminal Justice Reform

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2016

I remained one of the most respected voices on criminal justice in the House this session. I'm particularly proud of passing measures to aid survivors of domestic violence, including better protective order procedures and requiring offenders to pay for counseling and other mental health services for children who witness domestic violence. I also passed reforms that offer stronger protections against the abuse of immigration detainees and more tools in the fight against human trafficking of all varieties.

Other efforts were less flashy but just as important. Things like reforming discovery of expert witnesses in criminal cases, expanding probation revocation hearing options for those in custody, and keeping more people out of jail in the first place when they're simply accused of not paying fines or court costs may seem like technical changes (and they are) but they'll save El Paso taxpayers money and make our system fairer for defendants.
