Hoeven Announces More Than $673K in Federal Funding to Support NDSU Agriculture Research

Senator John Hoeven, who serves on the U.S. Senate Appropriations and Agriculture Committees, announced today that the National Science Foundation has awarded $673,606 to North Dakota State University (NDSU) to help fund research on growth rates and body size variation in bees. Bee body size predicts pollination performance, and by improving our understanding of bees' physiological traits, researchers can draw conclusions on pollinator health and performance.

"Honey bees are vital to agriculture, pollinating beets, beans and other important crops," Hoeven said. "In North Dakota we also produce more honey than any other state in the country. NDSU is a world-class research institution and this grant will support research that may offer insights into how we can better improve pollinator and bee health."

North Dakota is the number one honey producing state in the nation. In 2014, the state produced more than 42 million pounds of honey, valued at $84 million.
