Issue Position: Protecting the Middle Class

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2016

Like many families, my parents worked hard and made sacrifices to ensure that my brother and I would have the best opportunities available growing up.

Because of the strong unions my parents belonged to, they were able to earn a decent wage, and enjoy several workplace protections. They were able to provide for our family. Sadly, both organized labor and our middle class is under attack.

We see jobs in our neighborhoods threatened every day. Last year, I took a stand along with local leaders and fought to keep 250 Northeast Philadelphia jobs in our community When Mondelez International decided to outsource jobs at the old Kraft/Nabisco plant to Monterrey, Mexico, I called for a boycott. As State Senator, I will hold corporations accountable for their actions and keep good paying jobs here at home.

When I worked for City Council as a staff member, I wrote the first draft of what would become the groundbreaking mandatory sick leave law.

As a State Representative, I have championed the issue of raising the minimum wage. I worked to block Republican-led efforts to destroy collective bargaining and prevailing wage. I also voted to strengthen protections against workplace discrimination for all our citizens.

I will fight every day to safeguard fair wages, job security and workplace protections for all working Pennsylvanians. I will fight to ensure that our residents have the same protections that my parents had to provide for their families.
