Rep. Keith Ellison released the following statement after Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump called for an end to Muslim immigration:

"Most people know more about what keeps our country strong than the leading Republican presidential candidate. Donald Trump should reread the words of our Constitution about religious freedom and tolerance. Do we really want someone who doesn't understand our values speaking to the world on our behalf?

"The President is supposed to bring everyone together, not divide through hateful rhetoric and fear mongering about an entire religion.

"The fact that Donald Trump is leading in the Republican Presidential primary polls should raise deep concerns about where Republicans want to lead our country.

"Demagogues like Trump appeal to the worst in people. They have never been celebrated in our history books - from Joseph McCarthy on.

"Americans know that we are braver and better than this."
