Lummis Votes to Restore Health Freedom

Date: Oct. 23, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis voted with a bipartisan majority of her colleagues to pass H.R. 3762: the Restoring Americans' Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act. The bill repeals key elements of Obamacare including the individual mandate, the employer mandates, the medical device tax, and the "Cadillac" tax. The bill also blocks federal funding for Planned Parenthood and diverts the monies to other medical centers for women's health. According to CBO, the bill would reduce the deficit by $129.8 billion over 10 years.

Since this legislation was developed under a budget process called "reconciliation" included in the FY 2016 budget resolution, it will be protected from filibuster in the Senate and can be passed there by a simple majority of 51 votes rather than the 60 vote supermajority typically required.

"President Obama has been protected from tough choices for years by Senator Harry Reid, but this bill can make it to the White House and force the president to reckon with Obamacare's dire consequences on American families' healthcare," said Rep. Lummis. "I am pleased with the committees' work to defund Planned Parenthood and target some of the more egregious provisions of Obamacare like the individual mandate and the medical device tax. As I continue working for a full repeal of Obamacare, I am proud to support this legislation that would save billions of dollars and give the Senate an opportunity to overcome the obstructive procedural tactics of Senate Democrats."
