Fleming Introduces Prayer Resolution

Statement

Date: Sept. 21, 2015

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. introduced H.Res. 430, a Congressional resolution calling upon the President to declare a National Day of Prayer for Law Enforcement.

"We're seeing a disturbing trend of law enforcement officers being targeted, simply for wearing the uniform. Law enforcement is a dangerous profession by nature, but this makes the job even more dangerous," Fleming said.

The resolution lists several examples: on August 28, 2015, Deputy Sheriff Darren H. Goforth was targeted and assassinated in Harris County, Texas, while wearing his police uniform; gunfire was directed at police officers during protests in Ferguson, Missouri, on March 12, 2015 and August 9, 2015; and New York City Police Department officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were targeted and assassinated in New York, New York, while they sat in a patrol car on December 20, 2014.

"President Obama has expended a great deal of effort in defense of the victims of police action," Fleming said. "It's time he extended the same level of effort in defense of innocent police officers."
