Newsletter: Making Government Work for San Diegans

Statement

Dear Friend,

In the past month we continued our focus on making government work for San Diego. By repealing the harmful medical device tax, improving Medicare Advantage, and championing the cause of equality, we're continuing to put San Diegans' concerns first.

Increasing Veterans Access to Care

We need to be getting our veterans and active-duty servicemembers, the care they need for their whole body - not just the physical wounds we can see. Recently, I introduced two bills to increase veteran's access to mental healthcare.

Improving Seniors' Health Care Choices

We passed a number of commonsense bills that will improve Medicare access and care for San Diego's seniors. These bills will help to ensure that Medicare Advantage is a viable program for years to come, increase access to preventative care that will lead to better quality of life, and reduce health care costs in the long run.

Spurring Innovation

The Medical Device Tax has been harming innovative companies across San Diego and our country. Medical device companies support 11,000 workers in our region, and we should be making it easier for job-creators to start their ventures and develop life-changing technologies. I helped lead the effort in the House of Representatives last month to repeal this tax. I'm pleased to report that the House passed this important bill and it now awaits action in the Senate.

Dual Victories for Equal Rights

As you may know, on June 26 the Supreme Court ruled in favor of nationwide marriage equality, a historic victory for the LGBT community and for our country. Now we must work to end discrimination in other arenas, including employment and housing.

Recently, I spoke out for employment non-discrimination protections for the LGBT community in federal transportation and housing programs. The amendment passed with broad bipartisan support on a 241-184 vote -- the most votes for LGBT non-discrimination legislation ever in the House of Representatives.
