Fischer: Our Government Has the Responsibility to End Human Trafficking

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

This afternoon, U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) applauded the successful passage of the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act -- legislation she cosponsored. Senator Fischer released the following statement after today's vote:

"Human trafficking plagues the world and our nation. This modern-day form of slavery has continued to grow all around us and action is long overdue.

"Our government has a responsibility to stand up and act for those kept in the shadows. Today we are sending a clear message that their lives matter and we are taking decisive action to protect women and children from this vile practice."

This afternoon, the Senate passed the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act. The bill, which Senator Fischer cosponsored, would set up a deficit-neutral fund to support victims of sex trafficking. Through enhanced reporting and mechanisms that would reduce demand, this bill would serve as a next step in providing care for victims of trafficking and child pornography.

The bill also protects victims in court by treating traffickers as violent criminals. By labeling traffickers in this way, convicts could now be detained while awaiting judicial proceedings. Funding for the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act comes from increased fines placed on those convicted of trafficking. Importantly, funding provided for health care services are subject to the longstanding Hyde protections, which prohibit the use of federal dollars for abortion-related services.
