"The Alaska AFL-CIO is the state's largest labor organization, representing 60,000 union members belonging to over 50 affiliated unions statewide, and also representing the interests of workers not represented by unions. Articles I & II of the Alaska AFL-CIO Constitution specify our cause: ARTICLE I Name of Organization This organization shall be known as the Alaska AFL-CIO as chartered by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. ARTICLE II Object, Declaration of Principles Section 1. The organization of all branches of labor for cooperation with each other in the establishment and maintenance of the highest possible wage rates together with the reduction of the number of hours constituting a work-day and work-week, for all crafts and callings. Section 2. To further harmonious relations between labor and management, employer and employee, that each shall recognize and respect the other. Section 3. To secure unity and harmony through a solid united front in all matters directly affecting the interest of workers and affiliated organizations. Section 4. The study of labor conditions in Alaska so that the resources of this great State shall maintain and support the people of Alaska, and ways and means by which the organized workers of Alaska may benefit by these resources. Section 5. To secure legislation which will safeguard and promote the principle of collective bargaining, the rights of workers, farmers and consumers, and the security and welfare of all people, and to oppose legislation inimical to these objectives. Section 6. To influence public opinion and increase public understanding of the labor movement by the publication of materials, speeches, participating in panel discussions and any other means compatible to the State Body’s need. Section 7. To encourage workers to register and vote to exercise their full rights and responsibilities of citizenship in national, state, municipal, school board, utility co-operative elections and other elected boards and commissions. Section 8. To bring about the affiliation of all local unions in the State with appropriate City Central Councils through use of the good offices of this Federation and to influence public opinion by peaceful and legal methods, in favor of Organized Labor. Section 9. To aid and encourage the sale of Union Label Goods and the purchase of union-made goods by union-earned money urging the union members to buy collectively as unions bargain collectively. Section 10. To aid and encourage the Labor Press and promulgate the principles enunciated by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations that “The Concern of One is the Concern of All”."
