New Hampshire State Legislative Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
No c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
I find it indefensible that a vocal minority shout "It is my body and my right to NOT wear a mask" and risk infecting and perhaps killing others while they oppose a woman's right to have control over her body.
No a) In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
No b) In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
No c) In order to fund education, do you support creating a state sales tax on electronics?
Yes d) Do you support the development of a road usage fee in New Hampshire?
I am against the nickel and diming we do in NH to fund education. Quality education is a priority and should be available to EVERY child in NH. We need to re-think our tax system to force the state to take more fiscal responsibility and bring equity in education. I would be for an income tax on those earning $150k and up. We need to turn the Social Security payroll tax upside down. No tax for low-income earners, no cap for high-income earners. Our pension system needs to change to eliminate the pension calculated on the last 3 highest years.
Yes a) Do you support a limit on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yes b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Yes d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
No e) Do you support automatic voter registration?
A common misconception by those who want political parties to continue their power to redistrict is that it is the legislature's responsibility. Under a commission, that wouldn't change. Any plan put forward by the commission would still need to be approved by the legislature. It just minimizes the dominance of either party in the process. The results will never be perfect, but they should be an improvement. Voters really should be picking their representatives; NOT the other way around.
No a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes b) Should an individual under 18 accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
No c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
No d) Do you support the use of private prisons in New Hampshire?
No e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
Yes f) Do you support the legalization of recreational marijuana?
a) I use to support capital punishment, but it is so unfairly applied and subject to emotion that I now find it insupportable. b) I think this should be left to the judgement of the judicial system in each case. It's not the age of the person as much as the maturity, family history and mitigating circumstances such as mental illness or disability.
No a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No b) Do you support lowering state income taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
No d) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
Yes e) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of New Hampshire?
Yes f) Do you support requiring employers to provide paid family leave?
Yes g) Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
c) I support regulations to protect the environment and consumers. There needs to be a balance between protection and over-regulation which misallocates resources to paper pushing as opposed to problem solving. f) I agree with a maximum of 3 months of paid family leave for which the cost is shared by the employer and employee. Any mandate longer than that is a burden on the employer.
Yes a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in New Hampshire?
No b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in New Hampshire?
Yes d) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from New Hampshire high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
I support offering students a wide-range of educational options so they can succeed in life but I think they should be offered under the umbrella of public education. Parents have always had the option of sending their children to a private school that suits their ideology. I don't think public funds should support it.
Yes a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes b) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
Yes d) Should the construction and expansion of landfills near state parks and federal lands be prohibited?
c) Regarding clean drinking water, we should not allow corporations to pollute our drinking water in the first place and we should not allow corporations to steal our clean water to sell it for a profit. This is where effective regulation is needed to protect our health.
Yes a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
No c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom after passing gun safety training?
Yes d) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
Sensible gun-control legislation is NOT gun confiscation like the 2nd Amendment folks would lead us to believe.
Yes a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Yes b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through New Hampshire's health care programs?
Yes c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yes d) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
No e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
No f) Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?
d) It is debatable if the private pay nursing home industry is in the health care business. After watching the inhumane treatment of a friend in a $9,400/month memory care facility, when the true cost of care is $6,600/month and most care is provided by those making $12.50/hr., it makes one wonder. Regarding Right-to-Die, it's my life; I should have the right to end it humanely. I and others shouldn't have to suffer because of someone else's ideology. The argument that it will be abused is specious. It should be a personal choice.
Yes a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in New Hampshire's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in New Hampshire's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support greater efforts by New Hampshire state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
Income inequality is one of the biggest threats to our democracy. The fact that Gov. Sununu vetoed a meager increase in the minimum wage while giving himself a $35k increase is the height of arrogance and hubris. I worked in the corporate world for decades and saw every day how white males were routinely paid more because they could be part of the "club", while women and POC were paid less and, in most case, equaled or out-performed the work of the white males.
Conserving our natural resources and environment through reuse, better recycling and pressure on industry to decrease packaging waste. Doing everything possible to help reduce the human impact on climate. Co-existing with wildlife and reversing the common wisdom that growth at any cost is good.
A quality education for all students in NH with educational choices for students of all abilities, not just an emphasis on those going to college. We could start by rethinking the state property tax, increase it while lowering local property taxes and distribute it to those towns in need. I think this has been tried before, but with the knowledge gained, maybe we could implement it better. We need to consider an income tax. With reciprocity, people working in MA , VT and ME could pay those taxes to NH. Lastly, high-worth retirees need to be paying more in taxes.
