Texas Civic Health Index

18 June 2013

Vote Smart first partnered with the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life in 2011, and they have graciously housed our office at the University of Texas, Austin since then. Our partnership has been going so well that, for the first time, we have been able to establish an intern program during the summer months, where college students can experience our Key Votes Department through researching bills and compiling voting records.

61.6% of Texans are registered to vote

The Institute, along with the National Conference on Citizenship, recently published The Texas Civic Health Index – the first of its kind. This report provides a comprehensive look at civil and political engagement in Texas, as well as looking at ways in which to engage with local communities to promote civics education and public affairs information, and we're happy to say that Project Vote Smart was cited as a tool to encourage knowledge and participation in the political process!

8.9% of Texans contacted or visited a public official

Those of you who want to know what individual steps you can make to expand your own personal participation, visit votesmart.org. We have voter registration information, contact details for your representatives and more. And if you want your own personal researcher to find some of the answers to your questions, then call our Voter's Self Defense Hotline on 1-888-868-3762!

Click here for the full Texas Civil Health Index Report. And afterwards you can even join the discussion by visiting www.txcivichealth.org.
