Title: Requires Juvenile Records from Prospective Tenants

Vote to pass a bill that requires juvenile information from prospective tenants in the state of Michigan.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits a landlord from requiring a prospective tenant to disclose any of the following (Sec. 2): 

    • A conviction set under pre-existing law; 

    • A finding of juvenile delinquency under 18;

    • Participating in a diversion program; 

    • An assignment of youthful trainee status; or

    • The entry of a court from another state regarding a juvenile violation. 

  • Establishes that there is an exception to crimes resulting in a criminal conviction (Sec. 2). 

  • Authorizes a tenant to bring action against the landlord for injunctive relief (Sec. 2). 

  • Requires that if the court determines the landlord has committed a violation they must issue an injunctive order requiring the landlord to cease and desist from this violation (Sec. 2). 

  • Establishes that violators are subject to a civil fine of not more than $250 for each day of the violation, with a maximum penalty of $2,000 (Sec. 2).
