Title: Requires Schools Provide Students 2 Hours of Religious Practice Per Week
Vote to pass a bill that requires public schools to release students from class to attend religious instruction for up to 2 hours a week.
Authorizes a parent or student enrolled in a public school to submit a written notice to the principal allowing them to attend a school for religious instruction (Sec. 1).
Requires the principal to work in a collaborative manner with the parent or entity offering religious instruction to provide assistance for the student receiving religious instruction (Sec. 1).
Establishes that the written notice is only valid for the school year in which it has been approved (Sec. 1).
Requires the entity providing religious instruction to maintain attendance records and allow inspection of these records to attendance officers (Sec. 1).
Establishes that a student that attends a school for religious instruction shall receive the same attendance credit as the student would receive from a public school, for the same length of time (Sec. 1).
Establishes secular criteria as including, but not limited to (Sec. 1):
Number of hours of classroom instructional time;
Course syllabus, methods of assessment in the course; and
Whether the course has been taught by a licensed teacher.
