Vote to pass a bill that establishes a commission to review the official seal and motto of Massachusetts and recommend a new design.

Highlights:

• Establishes a special commission to investigate the features of the official seal and motto of Massachusetts (Sec. 1).

• Requires the commission to submit a report not later than October 1, 2021, that includes, but is not limited to (Sec. 1):

• Recommendations for a revised or new design of the seal;

• Recommendations for a revised or new motto;

• Recommendations for an educational program on the history and meaning of the seal and motto; and

• Drafts of legislation necessary to carry out the recommendations.

• Requires the commission’s report to be available to the public via the internet (Sec. 1).

• Requires the commission to be comprised of members of groups including, but not limited to (Sec. 1):

• The Commission on Indian Affairs;

• The Massachusetts Historical Commission;

• The Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities;

• The Massachusetts Cultural Council; and

• The House and Senate Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight.

• Authorizes the commission to seek, accept, and expend grants or gifts of money, and  professional, consulting, clerical, or other services and supplies in the course of its investigation and study (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that the commission will dissolve 60 days after the submission of the report, unless a two-thirds vote decides an extension is necessary (Sec. 1).
