Vote to pass a bill that amends the state sex education curriculum guidelines, effective July 1, 2013.
Highlights:
Requires the board of trustees of each school district to establish a factual, age-appropriate sexual education course that includes, but is not limited to the following topics (Sec. 1):
The human reproductive system;
Sexually transmitted diseases;
Domestic violence, sexual abuse, and human trafficking;
Development of skills necessary to promote sexual responsibility;
Methods of contraception;
Abstinence;
Counseling, legal, and medical services;
Effects of alcohol and drug use on judgement;
Data to counteract “misinformation” from peer pressure or media; and
State and federal laws related to consent.
Requires the school district to notify parents that the sexual education course will be offered, which includes a form for the parent to opt the student out of the course (Sec. 1).
Specifies that a sexual education course may be taught only by the following individuals whose qualifications have been previously approved by the board of trustees (Sec. 1):
