Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that requires certain privacy controls for social networking websites.

Highlights:

• Prohibits social networking sites from displaying to the public or other users any information about a registered user other than the user's name and city of residence without explicit agreement of the user (Sec.1).

• Requires social networking sites to include in the user registration process the ability to set privacy settings in an "easy-to-use" format (Sec. 1).

• Requires social networking sites to remove personal information of any registered user within 96 hours of his or her request to do so, or the request of a parent if the user is under 18 years of age (Sec. 1).

• Defines "social networking Internet web site" as an Internet web-based service that allows an individual to construct a public profile, create a list of other users with which the individual shares a connection, and view the list of connections of other users (Sec. 1).

• Defines "personal identifying information" as including, but not limited to, the following information (Sec. 1):
• Name;
• Address;
• Telephone number;
• Driver's license number;
• Social security number;
• Place of employment;
• Credit card, demand deposit, or savings account numbers; and
• Information about a person's current location.

• Establishes a fine up to $10,000 if a social networking site knowingly violates any of these provisions (Sec. 1).
